Theatre Horizon has done it again. As they’ve done so many times since its founding in 2005 by Erin Reilly and Matthew Decker, Theatre Horizon has brought some of the brightest talent in the region to Norristown and let them flourish creatively. Tick, Tick…Boom! at Theatre Horizon is a must-see production led by co-director Steve Pacek and a terrific cast of Robi Hager, Elena Camp, and Angel Sigala.
Tick, Tick…Boom! is an autobiographical musical from Jonathan Larson, the creator behind the smash hit, Rent. It takes place the week leading up to his 30th birthday as he struggles to break through in the theater industry and anxiously contemplates his life’s path. It’s a gripping story that ponders important topics, and this production is no different in its ability to stir you emotionally and make you ponder your choices. This production not only dives into the emotional weight of the story, it also leans heavily into its humor. Moments in the show that I’ve seen played straight in numerous other productions are here played for laughs to incredible effect. Jonathan Larson wrote subtle humor into his story, but I’ve never seen it achieved so brilliantly until this production. A scene at a market research firm that usually gets a chuckle or two in most productions nearly stopped the show with Elena Camp’s comedic timing and improvisation skills. It’s obvious in hindsight that a show written by and about a cynical but playful 29-year-old would be funny, but only this production under the co-direction of Steve Pacek (a hilarious comedian actor in his own right) brought it out fully.
The three-person cast is simply exquisite. Playing Jon is Robi Hager, also a co-director of this production. Hager does an excellent job showcasing the youthful exuberance of the character as well as his snark. Hager’s charming performance shows you why Jonathan Larson was such a popular person. Angel Sigala plays Michael (and others) with emotional resonance. Sigala, who was recently seen on Broadway in New York, New York, brings his Latino identity to his characters and truly personalizes them, especially as Jon’s best friend facing a more uncertain future. Rounding out the cast is Elena Camp as Susan (and others). Camp is truly hilarious playing the roles of Jon’s agent, a market research executive, and more; her command of comedy is impeccable. Camp’s voice is also remarkable, with her performance of the song “Come to Your Senses” bringing the house down. All three performers are gems, and their connection on stage is palpable.
I’ve seen multiple great productions of Tick, Tick…Boom!, and this one truly elevates the already excellent material. With Theatre Horizon giving license to the talents of Steve Pacek, Robi Hager, Elena Camp, and Angel Sigala, it’s no surprise that this version thrives. This production is special, these four creatives telling the story of a legendary creative is a gift.
