Relaxation north of the border in Quebec

by Corey Cohen
The Cultural Critic

Quebec City is a slice of Europe within the shores of North America. Quebec was founded over 400 years ago and is now a charming cultural getaway within driving distance to many US population centers, including New York City which is only 500 miles away.

There are plenty of things to do in cozy Quebec City, but after a day of exploring, there are especially excellent opportunities for relaxation. Within the fortified walls of Old Quebec, you can casually stroll everywhere while you take in the Quebecois culture. An incredible home base to have in Old Quebec is at Hotel Manoir d’Auteuil. This boutique hotel is a family-owned business. It’s in an excellent location, walking distance from everything in Old Quebec. As you first step in onto their marble floor in the lobby, you enjoy an art-deco style design, transporting you elegantly back in time. The rooms are luxurious, with remarkably comfortable beds and substantial space. Breakfast is available downstairs, where you can enjoy a delicious croissant breakfast sandwiches or a French crepe with berries. The staff is extraordinarily friendly and helpful, emphasizing the benefit of staying at a boutique hotel where each guest feels valued. Hotel Manoir d’Auteuil is an excellent accommodation for anyone staying in Quebec City, and especially for those looking for true comfort.

Another incredible choice for those looking for relaxation is Le Monastère des Augustines, a holistic hotel, spa, and wellness center. Le Monastère was started as a hospital in the 17th century by Augustinian nuns whose goal was to help heal bodies and souls. It closed in the 1960s and is no longer run by the Augustinian Sisters, though a museum in the building maintains fascinating artifacts from centuries ago. Now Le Monastère des Augustines is a non-profit organization with a similar social mission of healing those who need it. The rooms are pleasant and uncluttered, with no TVs to help you disconnect from distractions. The “authentic” rooms are where the monasteries used to live; they remain with antique furniture and simple designs. Stays include a “vitality breakfast,” a meal of fresh, nutritious food in a silent space to peacefully start your day. The highlight of Le Monastère is the spa, which includes everything from traditional massages that feature ritualistic foot purification, to relaxation and breathwork sessions. I can say from personal experience, their massages are incredibly healing and tranquil. The most wonderful thing Le Monastère does is offer “solidarity respites,” heavily discounted rates for caregivers of disabled loved ones. For anyone who has become a caregiver for a family member, it’s immediately clear that rest and relaxation is necessary to continue helping. Le Monastère des Augustines advances their mission of healing to those who help heal others; it’s a truly good deed.

Within the walls of Old Quebec City, you can escape into a different world. You can stroll through old, cobblestone streets and view some incredible landmarks, all while enjoying a slow-paced slice of tranquility. Both Hotel Manoir d’Auteuil and Le Monastère des Augustines have established remarkable getaways for anyone looking for some peace and quiet. With just a quick trip to Quebec City, you can achieve serenity.
