Geneva view from the lake

Switzerland’s uniqueness

Switzerland is a unique country, different from the rest of Europe, and even within Switzerland there are particular territories, such as the Lake Geneva region.

Geneva is a global city, especially in the financial and diplomatic sectors. It’s also one of the most expensive cities in the world, yet is ranked among the best in quality of life.

The easiest way to explore the city is with a Geneva Pass, which you can purchase through the tourism office. This allows you on all the local transportation as well as admission to dozens of attractions. You can take a cruise on Lake Geneva to get a great glimpse of Jet d’Eau, the city’s monumental water fountain that shoots up nearly 500 feet in the air. You can also use the pass to travel up the Mont Saleve cable car and see breathtaking views of Geneva from high above. The serenity you achieve on top of the mountain overlooking the city can’t be matched elsewhere.

For lodging, there’s an excellent hotel not far from the airport and Palace of Nations (now used for the UN). Movenpick Hotel in Geneva offers a luxury stay with their “Sleep” rooms, featuring one of the most comfortable beds you’ll sleep on complete with adjustable firmness. They also have a delicious breakfast option as well as a Sky Gym. You can’t do better than staying at Movepick for a blissful visit.

An easy day trip from Geneva can take you to the opposite side of the lake to the lesser-known but incredibly charming town of Montreux. For those who have heard of the city, it’s likely due to its connection to music. Montreux hosts an annual jazz festival, Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water was written in and about Montreux, and legendary rocker Freddie Mercury set up his home in Montreux, as well as Queen’s signature Mountain Studios. The classic song Under Pressure was recorded here and Queen’s final album Made In Heaven, released after Mercury’s death, features the nearly 10 foot tall statue of his likeness located in Montreux on the edge of the lake. While the studio doesn’t remain in operation, you can visit the Queen Studio Experience, a museum located on site.

Even if you’re not into music, Montreux Riviera has plenty to offer everybody with its beauty. On the banks of Lake Geneva you can visit Chateau Chillon, one of the most gorgeous castles in Europe (and the inspiration for the Little Mermaid castle). To journey there, you can take a CGN cruise which travels around the lake, offering pristine views of the Alps. For lunch, try out Restaurant Le Museum where you can have the unique experience of cooking your own steak on a tableside grill. And if you’d like to take it easy, simply a stroll along the lake offers some of the most majestic views you’ve ever seen. Make https://www.montreuxriviera.com/en/ your one stop to prepare for a trip to Montreux, the tourism office provides an invaluable guide to the region and its highlights.
